There was fresh tension in Osun State on Monday after police confirmed the arrest of 19 individuals linked to the assault of a police officer during a violent clash between communities.
The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, made it clear that those responsible would face the full consequences of their actions. He stressed that the command would not tolerate any form of attack on its personnel or breakdown of law and order.
According to a report by The PUNCH, the incident is tied to a long-standing boundary and land dispute between Ilobu and Erin-Osun. The crisis, which has lingered for years, recently escalated, prompting security operatives to intervene.
However, the situation took a disturbing turn when some residents reportedly attacked the officers sent to restore peace. Among those arrested earlier were two community chiefs, the head of a hunters’ association, and several residents of Ilobu.
A viral video circulating on social media further fueled public concern. The footage shows a man believed to be a police officer being beaten, humiliated, and forced to kneel in front of a crowd. The clip, shared on Facebook, alleged that the officer was punished over claims he fired tear gas during the crisis.
Speaking while parading the suspects at the police headquarters in Osogbo, Gotan revealed that one additional suspect had been apprehended, bringing the total number to 19. He reiterated that the police would ensure justice is served and warned against taking the law into one’s hands.
The incident has once again highlighted the deep-rooted tensions between the two communities and raised serious concerns about respect for law enforcement and the rule of law in conflict zones.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing, and more arrests could follow if others are found to be involved.
