Meet Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran: The Scholar-Administrator Transforming Basic Education in Oyo

 


In Oyo State’s education sector, Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran has carved a distinct reputation as a visionary leader whose career cuts across academia, law, and public service. As Chairman of the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (OYOSUBEB), he continues to drive reforms aimed at strengthening foundational learning across the state.



Humble Beginnings, Remarkable Journey

Born in Ibadan South-West Local Government Area, Dr. Adeniran’s early life reflects the story of determination and discipline. He started his educational journey at Ansar-ud-Deen Primary School, Oke-Foko, before moving to Moslem Grammar School, Odinjo, where he completed his secondary education in 1981.


His academic path progressed through the Oyo State College of Arts and Science, Ile-Ife, and later to the prestigious University of Ibadan, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Adult Education and Political Science with Second Class Upper Division honors.


Not stopping there, he obtained both a Master’s degree and a PhD in Communication Arts & Community Development from the same institution emerging as one of the institution’s most outstanding postgraduate students.



Academic and Professional Footprint

Dr. Adeniran’s career began in the classroom, where he lectured during his NYSC at Kaduna Polytechnic. He later became a respected academic at the University of Ibadan and rose to the position of Senior Lecturer at Lead City University.


His expertise spanned multiple disciplines, including communication studies, research methodology, and media theory. Beyond teaching, he mentored students and contributed to academic development through research and supervision roles.



Legal Pursuit and Private Practice


In a bold step to broaden his professional scope, Dr. Adeniran studied Law at the University of Ibadan, graduating with honors before proceeding to the Nigerian Law School. He was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2008.


He subsequently founded ADENIRAN & ADENIRAN ASSOCIATES, a law firm based in Ibadan, where he practices as a legal practitioner and consultant alongside a team of professionals.



Political Influence and Public Leadership

Dr. Adeniran’s transition into politics saw him serve as Executive Chairman of Ibadan South-West Local Government between 1999 and 2002, where his administration was noted for grassroots development initiatives.


He later served as Commissioner in Oyo State, handling critical portfolios including Industry and Education under the leadership of Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala.


A key figure within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), he has played strategic roles in election campaigns and governance structures supporting Seyi Makinde, further cementing his relevance in the state’s political space.



Driving Change at OYOSUBEB

Since his appointment in 2019 by Governor Seyi Makinde, Dr. Adeniran has been at the forefront of repositioning basic education in Oyo State. His leadership has emphasized quality teaching, improved infrastructure, and strategic policy implementation.


His achievements earned him a second-term reappointment, as well as recognition among his peers, who elected him as the South-West leader of SUBEB Chairmen. He currently serves as Secretary of the National Forum of SUBEB Chairmen.

Dr. Adeniran’s experience extends beyond Nigeria, with participation in international conferences and leadership programmes across Africa, Asia, and Europe. These engagements have helped shape his approach to governance and education reform.


His contributions have earned him several awards, including leadership excellence recognitions, media awards, and honors from professional and cultural organizations—highlighting his impact across sectors.
