Truck crushes policeman on stop and search

A policeman on a stop and search duty was on Wednesday crushed to death by a truck on Owerri/ Okigwe Expressway in Imo State.

The incident, which occurred at Atta, in the Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State, caused panic in the area.

Our correspondent, who visited the scene of the incident, saw police officers bewailing the tragedy.

The accident also caused gridlock on the expressway, as a crowd of onlookers gathered at the scene.

The corpse of the police officer was still on the ground when PUNCH Metro visited, as gun wielding police operatives cordoned off the spot.

A motorist said the heavy duty truck crushed the policeman after he flagged the driver down.

He said the truck, which was on a speed lane, crushed the cop.

The motorist said, “A truck crushed him after he flagged it down and the driver refused to stop. The victim, who was on a stop and search duty with his colleagues, did not leave the road as the truck sped in his direction. Other police officers went after the killer truck driver, but I am not sure they were able to get him. This is tragic.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Orlando Ikeokwu, said the command had received the news.

He said, “We have just been told; necessary action has been activated by the command. The command is saddened by the development.”
